Hadrian`s Wall has been a marvel of the ancient world since the first stone was laid in 122AD. Built to define the farthest extreme of the known world, it stretches 84 miles from coast to coast, Wallsend on the North Sea to the western shores of Bowness-on-Solway. This guidebook follows the entire route from both directions, mixing route descriptions and practicalities with historical detail to breathe life back into this Roman ruin.

Walking this historic route became possible when the Hadrian`s Wall Path National Trail opened in 2003. The wall winds like a ribbon over moorland and crags, past blue lakes and blankets of woodland. The possibilities of walking this route; past Roman forts and medieval churches, through hamlets and the urban sprawl of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, ensures the walker is treated to endless variety and interest along the way.

The trail typically takes about a week, and this guide is filled with information on the many sights along the route. Included too is practical advice on accommodation, transport to the start and finish points as well as the author`s own sketches, panoramas and maps to guide you.
